Sex education is not a devil's tool

Aktualizováno: 2. 1. 2023

Sex education is often seen as taboo, as something we have to protect our children from. In fact, it is one of the most important parts of education system, as it teaches (not only) adolescent people about themselves, their body and their sexuality – a great part of their life. In conservative perspective, sex education endangers their purity, but in my opinion, ignorance could be way more dangerous.

In sex education students learn about how their body works, about sex and sexual practices, but also about sexual diseases, safe sex, psychological side of sex, gender identity and many more. Safe sex as a prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is one of the best ways how to deal with them and sex education is therefore a useful mean of protecting youth.

As I said before, sex education also teaches about gender identity and different sexualities. When LGBTQIA+ children grow up and start noticing that they are probably different than others, they could feel confused and hopeless. They need information and family is not always supportive and talkative. In these cases, sex education has a significant role in their life and could also save them by helping them to understand their, often difficult, situation.

Despite that there are doubts about the age in which we should introduce sex education to them. Some people are afraid it will corrupt their children or even develop some kind of deviancy. This opinion is spread probably because of the taboo that sex still is.

To conclude, sex education is an important part of education system and there is no rational reason to be afraid of it. In my opinion, some level of sex education should be a part of regular education in all years of school attendance as sex should be taken as common part of life and properly taught sex education could help children in plenty of ways.
